From the industrial fallout and heavy-metal detritus of Pantera, EyeHateGod and Corrosion of Conformity, the band Down have risen like a phoenix from the ashes. When Phil, Pepper, Kirk Rex and Jimmy decided to work together, a supergroup was born. Fashioned and welded from nothing but aggressively raw talent, Down have been compared to Led Zeppelin, an association that the band obviously took to, as they named their 2002 album “Down II: a Bustle in your Hedgerow.” To give you an idea of how rock ‘n’ roll these Southern American metalheads are, just know that they wrote this album in a drug and booze-induced haze over 28 days in a barn. No doubt they really trashed that place, threw a few hay bales around and overturned the manger. Rock. The band have seen some tricky times, with many a hiatus as members returned to their original projects. But in 2006, after a lucrative signing with Warner Brothers, the boys are back and heading a musical revolution. Their most recent album “Down III: Over the Under” is literally pulsating with emotion and real-life experiences: the break up of Pantera, the murder of ex-Pantera guitarist Dimebag and Phil Anselmo’s tricky back operation. Listen to their hearts bleed at B1Maximum at 7 p.m. on March 18. Cover is 2,000 rubles. |
