galactic lovers
The World Domination enslave 16 Tons.
TEXT LEAH SULLIVAN feedback
There was a time it would have been politically impossible to call a German band The World Domination and bring it to Russia in mid-January, right under the nose of General Winter. It would be like calling one of your children Adolf, or holding a Weight Watchers meeting at Auschwitz. But, thankfully, those days are long gone. Now we can welcome German electro-rock duo The World Domination back to Moscow with open arms. With their singles “Galactic Lover” and “Jesus Christ I Feel Alright,” the pair artfully mix electro beats and vintage synths with heavy riffs to create an invigorating and catchy pop-rock sound. So catchy, in fact, that you wonder why the band isn’t better-known. Perhaps it’s their penchant for crotchless leather trousers. The World Domination’s latest album “Heat,” released last year, is a dark, fast and furious record which reveals a wildly eclectic range of influences. In songs like “My Pleasure” we can hear the influence of, bizarrely, both AC/DC and a strain of something that sounds like Talk Talk. This Berlin-based band sing most of their songs in English, having practically exterminated any trace of a German accent. Bad choice of verb? Anyway, they play on Friday, Jan. 18, at 16 Tons. Tickets are 300 rubles and are available at the door from midnight. |
