the x-man
IAMX’s glam misery finds Sixteen Tons.
TEXT FRANCIS MERSON feedback
This one-man band is a spin off of the Sneaker Pimps, which Chris Corner, who now goes under the pseudonym of IAMX, conceived at the tender age of 15. This new project is a shamelessly decadent throwback to the glam days of early 80s electronic music, when androgynous young men with sweaty fringes sang songs of angst and self-adoration. IAMX’s music is a slightly revised version of the above, mixed with a dash of Detroit techno and the inimitable stamp of the Sneaker Pimps. So, unlike Depeche Mode, to which IAMX has often been compared, this is music which does more than stimulate the misery gland: this is something you can dance to, or at least gyrate to in narcissistic rapture. Mr. Corner has an ulterior motive for his trip for Moscow, as he is a co-writer of the soundtrack to psychological thriller “Zhest” (Junk) which premieres on March 23. His show at Sixteen Tons the next night should be one of the most memorable electronic events of the year, as this wunderkind producer/singer gives it all he’s got. Tickets go for 800 rubles, and the show kicks off at 11 p.m. |
